From Context to Exhibition 2012

From Context to Exhibition

An exhibition of work by student artists who participated in Create’s training program.  The exhibition took place at the Lab, Foley St, Dublin and the work shown was the result of an engagement with traders and marketplaces in the Liberties area.

The following is an installation of work based on a project completed under the direction of Create.  This work was based on a project undertaken in the Liberties area, an area with a rich market history, which aimed to engage with local traders through an exchange of stories.  We visited several traders and asked them to tell us a story (or two or three) relating to their premises or the local area.  In exchange we gave them a print, made in response to a story we had heard from another trader and passed on the story.  In this way, stories were exchanged between premises and a sort of trail emerged.  We requested that the prints be left on display somewhere in the place of business for the duration of the exhibition.  The exhibition installation included second copies of all the prints we had made for the traders, as well as photographs and elements of research from the Liberties area.  A map was available at the exhibition which showed the establishments which participated in and characterized our exchange of stories.  The presence of the map allowed for the possibility that the viewer could take the walk themselves or at least leave with a connection to where the original prints were held.  A sound piece was also played in the space, which was a recording of a walk through the area with which we had engaged.
